All mail passing through our network is filtered for spam and virus attachments, whether for dialup users of Bribie Net or for domain names managed by Bribie Net.
Domain routing and email Domain names registered with or managed by Bribie Net have the option of utilising our mail servers to route email addressed to that domain for delivery to nominated email accounts on any service. Our mail routing and spam/virus filtering are optional and free.
Spam Filtering Our clients no longer have to contend with spam nor bother with software that claims to reduce spam. Almost all spam is now stopped at the server before it reaches your computer. Our spam filtering system is most efficient and uses a score based dictionary targeted towards keywords commonly found in unsolicited mail as well as referring to the RBS blacklist of known spammers. The system is so efficient that occasionally some innocent mail may also be trapped and clients are invited to contact support and report such events... the system is fully configurable to allow the listing of specified senders and recipients to bypass the filters. If a user needs to receive mail with content that the system has been designed to trap, they have the option of either adding their email to the "white list" or resubscribing to the sender’s service using one of the junk mailbox services such as Hotmail or Yahoo. Mail sent within the Bribie Net network such mail sent from one Bribie user to another is not affected by the spam filters... the filtering only applies to mail received at our outward mail server from other Internet services. Any spam that is trapped is deleted silently and neither the recipient nor the sender are notified (most spammers use false addresses anyway). Spam filtering is applied to all mail addressed to users at either bribieisland.net or bribie.net.au which does not include mail addressed to any of the domains registered or hosted with us. Owners of domains using our services wanting spam filtering applied can to contact support to have the service enabled.
Virus Filtering All mail sent and received by our mail service is filtered for virus attachments and if an email is found to be infected, the offending attachment is removed and the email is still delivered to the recipient. The system does not notify the sender of infected emails as today it would be sending mass mail into the ether... mostly to phoney mailboxes conjured by clever viruses and spammers. The virus filtering system is not warranted 100% however we feel that users can be safe and should the odd one slip through, unless the attachment itself is opened, there will be no danger (it is safe to read the email itself and users should not panic). The major benefit of this system is that our unwary and inexperienced users are very much less at risk. If its any consolation, at Bribie Net where we have a score of computers running as both servers and workstations, antivirus programs are not needed. Antivirus is applied to all mail for Bribie Net users including those with domain and web hosting services.
For the technical The filtering systems that we are using are the most efficient that we have found after quite a long period of testing. They do not slow down the service and in the event of failure they will drop our seamlessly leaving the mail servers running. Yes there are now more than one mail server involved as it was found that these particular systems cannot run on the same server. Also, by using an inner and outer mail server we were able to create a more secure route to foil some of the nasty tricks that the professional mail spammers can get up to (they call themselves marketing companies!). NOTE: Bribie Net users do not have to change their mail settings to enjoy the security of the upgraded email service.
